The New Reality: The Business of Indigenous Kids in Care
Description
March 1, 2024
More than 50 insiders with Ontario’s child-welfare system are blowing the whistle, telling ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ they believe for-profit group homes companies are targeting, and in some cases, even charging more to care for Indigenous youth. From remote First Nations in northern Ontario to Nunavut -- ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ found that communities with the fewest resources were often forced to send their children hundreds of kilometres away – to private group homes in the south. Former youth in care say the experience of leaving community and culture is traumatizing and lasting. Carolyn Jarvis investigates.
