In the battle against climate change, expansion of nuclear energy is being considered as an option. One of the drawbacks, however, is what to do what with all the spent fuel. Ever since Canada’s first full-scale nuclear reactor went into service in 1968, it was understood that radioactive fuel would someday require permanent disposal. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization set “this year” as a deadline to find a permanent site. Eric Sorensen reports.
