Gazans observe Eid amid war, loss, and ongoing ceasefire negotiations

Palestinians in Gaza observed Eid al-Fitr amid the devastation of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Many gathered for prayers outside destroyed mosques, reflecting resilience despite severe food shortages caused by an Israeli aid blockade. The somber mood was evident as mourners like Inshirah Hanouneh visited graves of loved ones lost in the conflict. Since Israel resumed airstrikes on March 18, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed.
Hamas has accepted a ceasefire proposal from mediators Egypt and Qatar, while Israel has responded with a counter-proposal. The war, which began after Hamas-led attacks on Oct. 7, 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands of Palestinian casualties, according to local officials.
