Rotary Club of Peterborough provides environmental innovator funds for projects
Description
May 27, 2025
Five environmental projects are getting a financial boost from the Rotary Club of Peterborough via the Rotary Environmental Innovator Funds.
Three projects were each awarded $3,000 for their innovative approach and high potential for impact:
- Wildrock Outfitters / Kawartha Land Trust – Native Plant Horticulture for
Invasive Species Control - Justin Sutton, Wildrock ComPassion Project/Anna and Elliott of KLT.
This project targets the invasive Dog-Strangling Vine (DSV) and aims to establish native plant alternatives with horticultural or agricultural uses to restore local ecosystems and support monarch butterfly habitats.
• Woodleigh Farms – Catching Carbon - Norm Lamothe. The project focused on increasing soil organic matter, this project repurposes underutilized biomass waste from forests and farms to promote sustainability and circular use of
carbon-rich materials.
• Clean Energy Generation – Sanostrategy Wind Turbine Installation - Eduard Yonathan
This project will test a new wind turbine technology with the goal of providing clean,
efficient, and accessible wind energy to farmers and remote communities.
Two additional projects were recognized with $1,000 runner-up awards for their innovation, strong community roots, and environmental promise:
• Taproots for Tomorrow – Carbon-Positive Air-Prune Beds - Tegan Moss/
Hayley Goodchild. This initiative supports native tree growth through scalable, climate-positive airprune bed prototypes and meaningful community partnerships.
• Second Nature Studio – Plastic Waste to Purpose - Steve Paul. A grassroots microfacility under Clean Up Peterborough, SNS will transform local #2 and #5 plastic waste into creative, durable goods while offering sustainability education and
community empowerment.
