The Municipality of Clarington is considering a new bylaw that could limit where people are allowed to protest. While nothing has been brought to council yet, it may be similar to Toronto's controverial "bubble zone" bylaw. That bylaw will owners of places of worship, schools, and daycares to apply for enforcement of a one-year, 50-metre access area prohibiting specific activities tied to demonstrations. In a Clarington council meeting on Monday, Clarington’s mayor said rather than curbing freedom of speech or people's ability to participate, the intention is to ensure access to vulnerable spaces. A draft bylaw will likely be brought to council for consideration in the near future.
