Representatives of BRICS member countries gathered on Sunday for the first day of the annual summit, held this year in Rio de Janeiro. Notable absences from this year’s summit include China’s President Xi Jinping, who sent his premier in his place, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is participating virtually due to an ICC arrest warrant. Putin told a summit of the BRICS countries that the liberal model of globalization was becoming obsolete.
