Democratic lawmakers from Florida travelled to a remote part of the Everglades to visit a federal immigration detention dubbed ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ on Saturday. The centre got the nickname from its location, a vast subtropical wetland teeming with alligators that a Florida official said provides natural barriers, requiring minimal security. “The cruelty is the point. This is a stunt. I mean, dropping flimsy infrastructure in the middle of the Everglades, in a swamp where they bragged about it being surrounded by alligators and pythons, I mean, the whole point is to, you know, look tough,” said Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democratic member of Congress.
