The first big wave of alleged threats against Canadian politicians was sparked by the carbon tax. Catherine McKenna was the environment minister when the Trudeau government’s carbon tax and rebate program took effect. She became a lightning rod for opponents of the policy. The abuse and threats started online and moved to the very real world. New data released by the Privy Council office shows that threats of violence against prime minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet went from nearly zero in 2019 to 337 in just the first three months of 2024 alone.
