Ottawa introduces Bill C-14 to tighten bail and sentencing as B.C. government presses ahead
Description
At a press conference on Monday, Minister of Justice Sean Fraser introduced Bill C-14, the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act, promising stricter bail and tougher sentences for violent and repeat offenders. Key changes add reverse-onus bail (e.g., choking/strangulation, violent extortion), restore driving bans for criminal negligence causing death or bodily harm, and end house arrest for serious sexual offences, including against children. B.C. Premier David Eby and MLA Niki Sharma say the bill reflects their asks and they're also pressing for a coming measure to make femicide a presumptive first-degree murder charge before Parliament rises in December.
